If you haven’t already signed up for IESF (Integrated Electrical Solutions Forum) Automotive, here is the link:  http://www.mentor.com/events/iesf/detroit/  IESF is scheduled for June 2 at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn (MI). If you’ve attended IESF in past years you know its value for both quality technical presentations and networking. I am looking forward to hearing John McElroy (Autoline)

Who do you like in the EcoCAR 2, the three-year collegiate automotive engineering competition that began during the SAE World Congress in Detroit earlier this month? The 16 teams that qualified for the competition are Cal State, Colorado State, Embry-Riddle, Mississippi State, NC State, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rose-Hulman, University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), Tennessee,

John Day The market research firm iSuppli recently predicted that factory-installed Wi-Fi will grow from about 174,000 this year to 7.2 million in 2017. That got me thinking about in-vehicle Internet access. iSuppli said automakers increasingly view wireless connectivity as a key competitive differentiator, and I am sure they do, but there is little consensus on how to provide that connectivity and little evidence … Read More

John Day I was glad to read Consumer Reports’ encouraging words about General Motors. CR said GM has improved considerably in the research firm’s latest new car predicted-reliability ratings, and 83 percent of Chevrolets now have average or better scores. That’s up from 50 percent last year. Overall, 69 percent of GM models had average or better reliability. The results give Sheila Sarver reason to smile, albeit … Read More

John Day I wanted to learn more about AUTOSAR, and so I spoke with two experts from General Motors – Nady Boules, director of GM’s Electrical & Controls Integration Lab, and Massimo Osella, lab group manager for electronic controls and software architecture at GM R&D. GM doesn’t have AUTOSAR software components in a production vehicle as yet, but as a core partner, the firm has been working with the AUTOSAR … Read More

John Day It’s nice to see that some groups can work together for the common good. I’m thinking of the companies participating in the GENIVI Alliance. BMW, Delphi, General Motors, Intel, Magneti Marelli, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Visteon, and Wind River formed the Alliance a year ago to create an open source in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) reference platform. The initial version of the platform was released just nine … Read More
