John Day It’s comforting to know that sometimes things are just what you think they are. I noticed, for example, that Audi recently updated its phone box to include Qi wireless charging, and I wondered, what’s a phone box? Turns out it’s a box in a car where you put a phone when you’re driving. Just as I thought. Presuming it works, wireless charging in a car sounds like a great idea. The less stuff to have … Read More

John Day   Sprint has become the first mobile carrier to use IBM MessageSight, which IBM describes as an appliance that enables organizations to manage and communicate with mobile devices and sensors in cars and traffic management systems as well as in smart buildings and household appliances. MessageSight is built on Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) technology. It can support millions of concurrent … Read More

John Day   Airbiquity came out with a new version (5.0) of their Choreo mobile integration platform this week and it sounds quite impressive for a few reasons. Besides giving automakers more information on connected vehicle usage, the new version more than doubles the number of geographic markets the platform covers. Chief revenue officer David Jumpa explains that in each of those markets Choreo is customized … Read More

John Day   In August Chrysler Group and Sprint announced a strategic partnership to integrate wireless technology into Chrysler’s Uconnect Access in-vehicle communication system, so Sprint and Chrysler’s announcement this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show – the launch of Sprint Velocity – should have been somewhat anticlimactic. But this week’s announcement transcended the Uconnect deal and positioned Sprint … Read More

A while back I met with the folks at TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) who are responsible for the VZ Navigator app on Verizon smartphones as well as navigation apps on myriad other smartphones. Networks in Motion launched the app in 2006 and TCS acquired them three years later. VZ Navigator uses Navteq maps but the app is built on HTML5 so TCS can work with any map provider and otherwise customize

John Day In June Verizon announced its plan to acquire Hughes Telematics and this week Sprint and Chrysler announced their strategic partnership for in-vehicle communication. Sprint and Chrysler said they are evolving Chrysler’s Uconnect with new features and services designed to help keep drivers focused on the primary driving task – and Sprint, heretofore a wireless services provider, is now also a systems … Read More

John Day For some time now, carmakers have been focused on allowing customers to use smart phones and other connected devices inside vehicles. The idea, for the most part, was to leverage the customer’s data plan, with the manufacturer allowing certain apps on the customer’s cell phone to be controlled from the head unit or steering wheel. Then, earlier this month, two car companies announced agreements with … Read More
