I don’t particularly care for airports. You rush to get to them. You rush thru check-in and push your way thru never-ending queues to go thru security and get the prerequisite pre-boarding massage (I seem to get pat downs as I go thru security a lot and even though I gladly submit to them I’m starting to think that they are a new service that the airlines provide and thus deserve a proper marketing … Read More

The Aberdeen Group conducted a survey of 536 electronics company management types to determine what business results (time-to-market, product cost and competitiveness, quality, … ) qualified them as “Best-in-Class” status. They then matched those BiC companies with common PCB design best practices that they had identified to help bring them to that status.
Highlighted as the 3 top … Read More

In the automotive industry we have always talked about the cost of reliability in terms of the warantee expense that they incur when they have a problem. You can justify a lot of tool and designer expense based on the cost of one failure that requires a warantee fix. Turns out warantee costs are a drop in the bucket compared to the cost in sales and credibility being experienced by Toyota.

Over the last few days, I’ve been in some interesting discussions, the crux of which revolved around “why would anybody care about doing analysis?”.
It’s an interesting question. Why does Company A mandate doing analysis for things like signal quality, power design, EMI verification, etc on every design while Company B forgoes analysis completely? Company B is still getting designs out, they’re … Read More

Thanks to the sterling efforts of Martin Tarr and the UK Electronics Knowledge Transfer Network a free on-line thermal management design guide is now available here.
If you scroll down the page you’ll see the following sections:
• The need for thermal management
• Dealing with the heat
• Thermal modeling
• The practicalities of cooling
• Implementing thermal management
Each of these can be expanded … Read More

Since I got into the PCB design tool writing business back in 1967 (hard to believe I’m still alive) with IBM, there has been a focus on creating better schematic, place, route and manufacturing data generation capabilities. And we as EDA vendors still have to continue to improve what we supply to our users for the design of the PCB: Keep up with the latest PCB fabrication technologies. Handle increasing … Read More
