Blunt talking happens at the sharp end.

Posted Apr 22, 2011, by Paul Johnston

Developing global platform cars is not easy. The workload of engineers designing electrical interconnect and delivering a manufacturing BOM for suppliers is considerable. The reality of electrical and electronic feature proliferation in a vehicle platform is somewhere between harsh and vicious for electrical design and wiring engineers. Not that I’ve personally tried to knock together a car … Read More

Build or buy

Posted Nov 13, 2010, by Paul Johnston

Coming from Great Britain to live and work in the USA it still strikes me as curious that people would describe how they had “built their house.” In the UK - where people would say “bought a house.”  When you are getting a new house, in both locales home buyers would pay someone to build it. The contractor would offer choices of kitchen and bathroom fittings, floor plan, interior … Read More

Empowering customers - its what we do!

Posted Aug 12, 2010, by Michael Stamper

Having been a technical specialist with Mentor Graphics for a little over 7 years now.  I work with a great group of people and we have had some great successes.  I was recently asked after our latest account win what made the customer choose Mentor Graphics? This is a question I was unable to answer straight away.  On the surface we have products to sell that they want to buy, but that is really too … Read More

Catia Operator's Exchange (COE) - Come see us!

Posted Apr 5, 2010, by Michael Stamper

I like going to trade shows - usually I am one of the many people doing “booth duty” - standing in the booth chatting with people and doing demonstrations.  Often I get to talk to some fine folks that have nothing whatsoever to do with electrical harness design and just want whatever trinket we are giving away - but you meet some interesting people and sometimes learn a little bit. This year the general … Read More

Harness Cost Reduction - the movie; appearing now Website remodeled

Posted Jan 27, 2010, by Paul Johnston

Mentor Graphics’ website has just been reorganized and improved so you can better find information relating to the Integrated Electrical Systems products. Capital and VeSys reviews, descriptions and information can now be accessed through www.mentor.com/electrical. The re-structuring is comprehensive and the appearance and friendliness of the site is improved. What was there previously wasn’t all that … Read More

Harness cost calculation: Miseries brought on by false estimates.

Posted Jan 26, 2010, by Paul Johnston

I’ll get to the business of estimating the cost of engineering changes to wiring harnesses in a minute or two.  You don’t want to overpay or undercharge. You want your estimates to be true and accurate. First a historical digression to identify where the phrase quoted after the colon in the title comes from. It is from the writings of Benjamin Franklin.  An unabashed interest in self-improvement … Read More

IESF - A different decade-type milestone. Scoop!

Posted Jan 21, 2010, by Paul Johnston

Two months to go approximately to the Integrated Electrical Solutions Forum in Detroit. It will be the tenth such event. In December 2008 in Detroit there were 600 registrations for this event. It is substantial.  Breaking news. You heard what follows first here. he Mentor Graphics Integrated Electrical Solutions Forum (IESF) 2010 is an event for design engineers, engineering management and executives … Read More

Highways in Capital Logic

Posted Jan 18, 2010, by Michael Stamper

Often when we are creating wiring diagrams we are limited by our page size for content - sometimes as small as 8.5″x11″ often 11″x17″.  I have designed using both - and used both in the field.  I can tell you I prefer to draw on 11″x17″ but when I am in the field troubleshooting I would rather handle and carry a smaller stack of paper. A helpful construct now in Mentor Graphic’s Capital Harness System … Read More

Predictions for twenty-teens Part 3: What will be different about wiring harnesses in the next 10 years.

Posted Jan 17, 2010, by Paul Johnston

This is the concluding section of a short series of looking ahead to the new decade of harness engineering and electrical systems design for automotive and other transportation sectors. This final post is dedicated mainly to a short assessment of the physical implementation of the designs – the raw materials and sub-assemblies.  My personal opinion is either correct or incorrect. Time will tell and … Read More

Forecast for 2010 to 2020 Part 2: What will be different about business processes in engineering wiring harnesses in the next ten years.

Posted Jan 16, 2010, by Paul Johnston

This is the second in a 3-part mini-series of looking ahead to the new decade in the wiring harness industry and the systems interconnect design business. The first part was about technology initiative and this part focuses on business concepts which I believe will be important.  These are my own opinions. Not snap decisions but as arrived at with some contemplation and a little research. They may … Read More
