Advanced Synthesis Tools from Mentor Graphics Support Actel’s Radiation-Tolerant RTAX4000S Device

WILSONVILLE, Ore., Sept. 7, 2005- Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq: MENT), today announced support for Actel's new RTAX4000S device in all of Mentor's advanced synthesis tools and solutions. The RTAX4000S is the industry's highest density radiation-tolerant field-programmable gate array (FPGA) for space designs. Customers can now immediately use Mentor Graphics{reg} Precision{reg} Synthesis or LeonardoSpectrumâ„¢ tools to design for all devices in the newly expanded antifuse-based RTAX-S family. Both Precision Synthesis and LeonardoSpectrum are fully compatible with the latest version of Actel's Libero 6.2 IDE design environment.

Actel and Mentor Graphics continue to work closely together to ensure excellent quality of results and ease of use for all customers designing with Actel FPGAs. "Our collaborative efforts bring significant benefits for companies seeking to develop system designs with high reliability, advanced features and superior performance. Mentor Graphics is a key supplier for FPGA users with a strong Mil/Aero presence, so their extended support for the new RTAX4000S device is very important to us," said Dennis Kish, vice president of marketing at Actel. "Our customers using the expanded RTAX-S family of devices will be able to improve system performance and reliability by leveraging the pushbutton and interactive optimization capabilities offered in Mentor's synthesis tools."

Building upon its technology leadership position with a complete range of design tools and flows for highly demanding applications, Mentor Graphics has earned the confidence of a large installed base of Mil/Aero customers. "We are pleased to partner with Actel and fully support the expanded RTAX-S family of devices," said Simon Bloch, general manager of the Design Creation and Synthesis Division, Mentor Graphics. "The latest high-density RTAX4000S FPGA demonstrates Actel's long-term commitment to meeting the exacting needs of its customers. Similarly, Mentor Graphics will continue to enhance the advanced features of our tools to fully support customers who are especially sensitive to the highest possible reliability standards."

The RTAX4000S device is the largest of Actel's flash-based FPGAs with up to 4 million system gates. The family brings a unique set of advantages for system designers in space applications, including built-in triple module redundancy (TMR). Like Actel's other space-flight FPGAs, the devices will be single chip, for minimum board space and weight, and hardened against radiation-induced single-event upsets (SEUs). In addition, the availability of a non-flight-worthy packaged version of the device proves useful for designing rapid prototypes using silicon with architecture, density and timing properties that are identical to the flight-worthy FPGAs.

The Precision Synthesis tool suite integrates logical (Precision RTL) and physical (Precision Physical) synthesis techniques to define a new approach to complex FPGA design. Built on a unified data model, it allows designers to cross-probe between multiple views, giving users added control when analyzing a design. The intuitive debug environment includes an incremental timing analysis tool that allows companies to solve next-generation FPGA implementation and timing challenges, resulting in shorter design cycles and significantly higher performance. The LeonardoSpectrum tool from Mentor Graphics is the mature, industry-proven synthesis product for both FPGA and ASIC design.
