This is not your daddy’s 18-wheeler! We’re all quite familiar with 18-wheeler diesel trucks. We see them on the road every day. They are a critical part of our mass infrastructure in various capacities. From moving companies, freight liners, to independent truckers, to retailers and package delivery, there are lots of big trucks on the road – collectively consuming significant amounts of diesel fuel. Companies like Intelligent Power are working with large truck manufacturers to improve the efficiency of the 18-wheeler market.
The team at Intelligent Power is designing a new motor controller system for a family of hybrid 18-wheeler trucks. In general, a hybrid vehicle means a gas/diesel engine coupled with a battery driven electric motor. The vehicle switches between the gas/diesel engine and the electric motor to improve efficiency. For example, some studies suggest that Class 8 hybrid trucks (i.e.: the largest 18-wheelers) can save between 30-35% in fuel, which is a significant savings! The images below are the first generation drive motor and controller system box from Intelligent Power:
The motor controller system created by Intelligent Power will be driven by four STMicroelectronics STM32F4xx devices with the Nucleus RTOS on each MCU device. The controller motor will run from 700 to 900 volts D/C input- outputs 3-phase peak power of 600kW to drive the propulsion motor. Nucleus is an ideal RTOS for this type application because of its reliability, deterministic performance and scalability. We’re really excited about this application and eager to see the next generation 18-wheelers hit the road with the Nucleus RTOS inside!
