Managing Over-The-Air Software Update and Management for Automotive Systems



Contemporary infotainment systems struggle to address the rapid changes seen in consumer electronics. As a means to remain relevant over the life of the vehicle, it is necessary to periodically update the software in the infotainment system, and other modules in the vehicle. This has historically been addressed through a visit to the dealer, and module replacement. We can expedite this process by taking advantage of wireless connectivity and using an Over-The-Air (OTA) approach to update software. This presentation will discuss approaches to implement and manage OTA, and in particular review the Arynga CarSync™ solution which has been integrated into the Mentor Graphics Automotive Technology Platform (ATP) for infotainment systems.

About the Presenters

Presenter Image John Cain

John Cain is the Head of Business Development at Arynga, and is responsible for generating and managing all strategic customer relationships, partnerships, and business agreements. John is an industry specialist in automotive electronics, software and software development. After starting his career as a mechanical applications engineer at Western Gear, now part of Northrop Grumman, John worked in business development and product marketing roles for United Technologies and Lucas Electronics (now TRW). Later in his career, positions included Director of Automotive at Philips Semiconductors (now NXP), VP of Automotive at Siemens Microelectronics (now Infineon), and VP of Marketing and Sales at Vector CANtech. In 2002 John formed 3IS, providing electronics research tools, benchmarking and consulting services to the automotive industry. Prior to joining Arynga, consulting engagement roles included: VP of Sales and Marketing, PLM Program Manager, Connected Vehicle Program Manager, and Marketing Analyst providing Linux based infotainment software product market requirements. John is an established author, having written a patent on IT related, server query processes and numerous whitepapers focused on automotive software development. John holds a BA from Virginia Tech and an MBA from Loyola University.

Presenter Image Pat Shelly

Pat Shelly is a Solutions Architect for Mentor Graphics’ Embedded Software division. He has been involved with embedded systems in the automotive industry for well over 25 years, with a particular interest in software architecture, and software development processes. His experience includes Powertrain Control Systems at Ford Motor Company, and Vehicle Stability Control Systems at TRW Automotive, and a wide variety of automotive Infotainment, Telematics and Instrument Cluster applications. Pat has served in a consulting role for many new automotive projects globally, frequently presents at professional organization events, and has delivered many Operating Systems and Development Tools training classes worldwide.
