WILSONVILLE, Ore., May 16, 2012—Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced that Vestel Electronics, one of Europe’s largest set-top-box (STB) manufacturers, developed its user interface (UI) for its new generation Android-based STB using the Mentor® Embedded Inflexion® UI product. With the Inflexion UI technology, Vestel quickly created a rich user interface that includes 3D perspectives, and mirrored like surfaces. The STB’s graphics hardware acceleration capability is unlocked by the Inflexion UI tool enabling Vestel to deliver these advanced features, fluid graphics, and transitions to its STB customers.

There is still a common misconception that a real time system is simply one that responds quickly to demands. Although a real time system may, indeed, be fast, its key characteristic is predictability. A real time system is deterministic – its response to an event will occur in a timely fashion, neither too quickly nor too slowly.
It is common to use a real time operating system [RTOS - like our

HCC-Embedded (www.hcc-embedded.com) recently released a version of its MISRA-C:2004-compliant TCP/IP stack for Texas Instruments’ Hercules ARM microcontrollers. The stack combines MISRA with HCC’s own coding standard to create a concise C language subset capable of “clear and robust code without ambiguities,” and thus suitable for many safety critical embedded applications, according to the company.

This week, I am please to introduce a guest blogger. My colleague Brooks Moses is getting ready for a conference:
Colin has graciously let me use this space to tell you about the things I’m doing to get ready for my presentation at NVIDIA’s GPU Technology Conference on May 15th. So, hello! …

Now, wait a minute, you’re probably wondering; what are we doing talking about GPUs?

White Paper:How to Guide: Using Sourcery CodeBench and Mentor Embedded Sourcery probe to debug the Linux kernel

This How-to Guide provides a detailed, step-by-step introduction to building and debugging the Linux® kernel with Sourcery™ CodeBench Professional and a Mentor Embedded Sourcery probe device - using a PandaBoard development board equipped with an OMAP 4430 processor as the target hardware. This paper demonstrates how to use features of the Sourcery CodeBench IDE to simplify the processes of configuring the target board, building the kernel, navigating around the kernel sources, and controlling the Sourcery probe debugger.

White Paper:How to Guide: Building a Linux Kernel using the Sourcery CodeBench IDE

This document demonstrates various techniques using the Mentor® Embedded Sourcery™ CodeBench IDE to build a Linux® kernel and kernel modules. This paper also demonstrates how to use Sourcery CodeBench to assist in board bring-up and navigate around a large, complex project such as the Linux kernel. The emphasis is on maximizing the time spent in a friendly desktop UI, making this an ideal environment for developers who are more comfortable using an IDE rather than low-level, command-line tools and kernel build procedures.

I was having some trouble with my Internet connection recently. I will probably never know exactly what was wrong [as ADSL is, for intents and purposes, magic], but investigating the problem was interesting. I am not a networking specialist, so I would expect that messing with the settings inside a router would be hard, but the manufacturers have made it very simple.
I began to wonder why there are

As I mentioned in my previous blog, much confusion exists around terminology. I think this is especially true when we speak of recipes and packages in the Yocto context. In the early days of Open Embedded (OE) , on which Yocto is based, there was a very simple relationship between recipes and packages. The relationship is still a close one, but it has become more complicated, as everything does over

I wrote before about my angle on presentation techniques. As I spend a lot of my time in front of an audience, I have given a lot of thought to how PowerPoint can be used as an effective tool for communication, instead of an instrument of torture.
I would like to share some more of those ideas with you today …
I have 3 tips to pass on in this posting. The first 2 are about starting the presentation
