Mentor Graphics Android Professional Services Aids Recon Instruments in Developing the World’s First GPS Micro Optics Displays
WILSONVILLE, Ore., November 29, 2011—Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced that its Android™ Professional Services has helped Recon Instruments develop the world’s first Android-powered, GPS micro optics displays for sports goggles. Recon Instruments is a Vancouver, B.C.-based manufacturer of customized direct-to-eye communications products—including MOD and MOD Live—based on the Texas Instruments OMAP3™ processor.
“Without Mentor's Android software services, it would have been very difficult for us to hit all of our milestones on time and deliver a commercial-ready product for the snow season,” said Hamid Abdollahi, Chief Technology Officer, Recon Instruments. “Mentor took a key support role at the beginning of the project, including software architecture design, silicon support, and Android software development. Our teams collaborated very closely to perfect the software before the launch.”
Recon Instruments was named an International CES Best of Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree for its first-generation action sports goggle, and received honors for best new product from Popular Mechanics, Popular Science and Mobile Magazine. The next-generation Recon MOD action sports product is an adjustable, color widescreen micro LCD that provides real-time information such as speed, jump airtime, GPS location, vertical and total distance travelled, temperature, altitude and time, plus a run counter and chrono/tracker feature.
The MOD Live sports goggle includes all the features of MOD and additional functions utilizing its Android operating system and Bluetooth capabilities for wireless connectivity to smart phones for access to music playlists, text messages and caller ID. MOD Live users can also take advantage of integrated resort information for navigation, and buddy tracking with included global trail maps. “MOD Live pushes the absolute extreme boundaries of Android development and direct-to-eye communications,” said Larry Luke, worldwide services sales director of Mentor Embedded and expert skier. “As an acknowledged leader in Android porting, development, optimization and commercial support, plus our strong relationship with TI, Mentor is proud to have assisted Recon Instruments in this sport-changing project.”
