Success Story
ABSTRACT

ZOLL chose the Nucleus operating system for their AED Plus™ automated external defibrillator because it proved to be successful in previous designs and kept costs down.
“Nucleus RTOS has been an extremely effective platform for all of our defibrillator products. We have been especially pleased with the software's reliability and ease of use, and plan to continue developing with the Nucleus software in the future.”
Ziad Elghazzawi, Ph.D., Director of ZOLL's Alternate Care Products Engineering
Nucleus RTOS Selected for the ZOLL AED Plus
ZOLL developers had first-hand experience with Nucleus RTOS before this particular project began. Originally evaluated and selected for the E Series™ and M Series® defibrillators, Nucleus RTOS was again evaluated because of its successful deployment in previous products. Developers were also very comfortable with the software due to its ease of use and reliability.
The new defibrillator needed the same reliability from an embedded OS that ZOLL's other safety critical devices required. And because Nucleus RTOS proved to be exactly what they needed in previous designs, developers chose the same software for the AED Plus.
For the AED Plus, business model and documentation were also an issue. Since Nucleus RTOS accommodates a very flexible business model, the final product cost could meet the expectations of ZOLL's customers. Well-documented source code meant that even though problems didn't surface with the development process, just having access to the source code was a tremendous benefit.
Reliable and robust, the Nucleus RTOS has a successful reputation for providing the foundation for many embedded applications in the medical industry. The small memory footprint and high optimization are a perfect fit for developing applications in the safety critical market.
ZOLL AED Plus – the First and Only Full-Rescue AED
The ZOLL AED Plus™ is an automated external defibrillator (AED) that has been designed to support the full Chain of Survival (created by the American Heart Association or AHA) by supporting effective CPR. The ZOLL AED Plus provides Real CPR Help™ with instantaneous feedback on rate and depth of compressions, giving rescuers the confidence they need to help all sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) victims, not just the victims who require defibrillation.
