HLS Summer Readings

Late July… Summer is upon us in all its splendor… But the show goes on. In the past few days two interesting articles related to High-Level Synthesis (HLS) were published, in EETimes and EDN, respectively.

  • Tips for implementing a viable ESL-synthesis flow

In EDN, Nancy Wu – Chief Analyst at Gary Smith EDA – addresses engineers “about to make plunge” and discusses items to help them set realistic expectations about their HLS flow. According to her “the time for return-on-investment justification has passed; it is now time to educate new adopters about rules of deploying ESL-synthesis tools”. She closes with a checklist of what to do and what not to do when performing high-level synthesis. Read full article here.

  • Give the people what they want: HLS for RTL verification

In this EETimes piece, Shawn McCloud – Product Line Director at Mentor Graphics – analyzes the results of a recent survey where people where asked their top motivation to use HLS. As in Wu’s commentary, McCloud finds that verification is central to powering the shift to HLS. He concludes: “Time to RTL is not as important as time to verified RTL. Mature HLS technology dramatically reduces the overall RTL verification effort because it allows engineering teams to more rapidly reach verification closure on the C code and then synthesize correct-by-construction RTL”. If your current RTL project is already behind schedule, you may want to check these two fine pieces. And adopting HLS might just help you get your job done sooner and enjoy some more of that fine summer weather.

About Thomas Bollaert

imageMy first encounter with HLS, back then behavioural synthesis, dates more than 15 years. Since then my ventures have led me to explore many aspects of the ESL design flow, including HW/SW co-design, architecture exploration and of course, C synthesis. Five years ago, I joined Mentor to develop the Catapult C product line in Europe. Recently, my little family followed me all the way from Paris to Oregon, where I now serve as product marketing manager for Mentor Graphics' high-level synthesis product line.
