Lessons from Mars

Mars Rover

Mars Rover "Spirit"

Water and life on Mars? Robotic explorers “Spirit” and “Opportunity” recently found strong evidence of past water on the red planet, a necessary condition for the presence of any kind of lifeform. At the Denver and Boston EDA Tech Forums, Dr. Steven W. Squyres – Principal Investigator of the Mars Exploration Rover Project – will give an industry keynote on his lessons from this one of a kind mission to Mars. Dr. Squyres will share insight on the lessons learned regarding the global team effort of more than 4,000 highly motivated engineers from the initial conception through development, launch, landing, and operations on the surface of Mars.

As an engineer, I always feel appealed by these stories. I like to know that mastering RTL design is useful to help mankind on its way to a better comprehension of the universe… If you have the chance to be in Denver on October 1st or in Boston on October 8th, don’t hesitate and register for the EDA Tech Forum.

Production quality RTL code from pure C++? Over the past 5 years, high-level synthesis (HLS) has repeatedly demonstrated successes in reducing design time from specification to verified RTL. Ericsson, achieving a 31 percent reduction in gate count using Catapult C, is just one the many examples. Hearing about how HLS can help with the design of wireless systems is one more good reason to attend the Denver and Boston EDA Tech Forums. Mobile devices have some of the most intricate design constraints of any ASIC development flow. HLS has proven extremely valuable to help overcome those issues. By attending the EDA-TF session you’ll learn about the best practices and the key technologies that make HLS a reality in mobile device design Don’t forget to register: http://www.edatechforum.com/events/

Water and life on Mars? Production quality RTL code from pure C++? Not sci-fi anymore!

About Thomas Bollaert

imageMy first encounter with HLS, back then behavioural synthesis, dates more than 15 years. Since then my ventures have led me to explore many aspects of the ESL design flow, including HW/SW co-design, architecture exploration and of course, C synthesis. Five years ago, I joined Mentor to develop the Catapult C product line in Europe. Recently, my little family followed me all the way from Paris to Oregon, where I now serve as product marketing manager for Mentor Graphics' high-level synthesis product line.
