This month, virtually all eyes in the aerospace community were on the 50th International Paris Air Show, held June 17 through 23 in Le Bourget, France. In just three days, leaders in the aerospace community crushed any doubts as to the health of the aviation market.
Aerospace is alive and well. The industry event opened its doors on Monday and, by Wednesday afternoon, buyers had placed orders totaling more than $100 billion (U.S.). Airlines, aircraft leasing companies, and other aerospace companies logged orders for various aircraft from Airbus, Boeing, Embraer, and more.
Fuel-efficient aircraft, such as The Boeing Company’s new 787-10 Dreamliner commercial airliner, garnered the attention of and won orders from emerging markets and budget carriers.
The 787-10 Dreamliner, the third member of Boeing’s 787 family, is being called a “stretch” airplane, given that the elongated airliner provides seating for between 300 and 330 passengers, depending on the airline’s chosen configuration.
Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner is calling the 787-10 Dreamliner the most-efficient jetliner in history. “The 787-10 is 25 percent more efficient than airplanes of its size today and more than 10 percent better than anything being offered by the competition for the future,” he says.
Five customers across Europe, Asia, and North America provided commitments for 102 of the newest Dreamliner. Customer launch commitments for the 787-10 include: Air Lease Corporation, with 30 airplanes; GE Capital Aviation Services, with 10; International Airlines Group/British Airways, with 12, subject to shareholder approval; Singapore Airlines, with 30; and United Airlines, with 20 airplanes.
