Consultronics (DSL Verification Test: CoLT-450 DSL Service Verification Test Set)
"We needed an RTOS that was both fullfeatured and flexible. Nucleus provided a fully developed product that integrated well with the other components of our CoLT-450 application. Using Nucleus allowed us to focus on the actual product development and let us do what we do best." --Ron Hurtig, Software Design Manager at Consultronics
Nucleus® Chosen for Consultronics' DSL Verification Test Set for Service Providers in Telecommunications Market
Consultronics is a privately held corporation that produces highly sophisticated measuring equipment and monitoring systems for the telecommunications industry. The company boasts two manufacturing plants, three research and development centers, and sales offices/sales representatives in over 70 countries. Consultronics is a world leader in DSL test equipment and offers test sets for ADSL, SHDSL, ISDN, Frame Relay, T1, E1, T3, SS7, and VoIP.
The CoLT-450 DSL Service Verification Test Set
The CoLT-450 is a highly portable, extremely modular hand held test set that is used by incumbent local exchange carriers (ILEC), competitive local exchange carriers (CLEC), service providers and contractors to install and troubleshoot DSL access circuits. It also allows users to test and troubleshoot the interconnection of supporting ATM and Internet layers in addition to the connection rate testing.
Nucleus Selected for the CoLT-450
With a list of requirements for choosing an operating system, developers at Consultronics quickly narrowed down the selection to four prominent real-time operating systems (RTOS). One of these requirements was that the RTOS had to seamlessly integrate with the developers' present tool set and the Motorola MPC850 processor.
While engineers required a full-featured, robust RTOS, they also knew that the source code would be key and paying royalty fees was not an option. Where would they find a full-featured RTOS without paying royalty fees, especially in the existing slow economy?
"We needed a solution, something up and running fast," said Ron Hurtig, software design manager at Consultronics. With time-to-market a critical issue, developers agreed that Nucleus from Mentor Graphics would be the best option for their project. Mentor offers Nucleus with well-documented source code and no royalty fees.
Mentor Graphics is well known for their unmatched technical support team that guarantees a response to customers within 24 hours. Mr. Hurtig has been pleased with the support that he has received, "The technical support was very helpful at the start up phase which is the most important part of the development cycle."
The implementation of Nucleus began in February 2000 and the CoLT-450 began shipping in July 2001. Consultronics plans to continue developing with Nucleus in future testing equipment.
