Logitech (Portable Digital Video Camera)
To develop a consumer electronics device like the Pocket Video 550 and 750, we knew we needed an RTOS that was proven, reliable and scalable. Mentor Graphics provided exactly what we required and we've been very pleased with the Nucleus RTOS." --Greg Stevens, firmware manager, Logitech Video Business Unit
Logitech Selects Nucleus® RTOS for the Pocket Video™ Portable Digital Video Cameras
Logitech designs, manufactures and markets personal interface products that enable people to effectively work, play and communicate in the digital world. Logitech is the leading manufacturer of web cameras, and has developed numerous digital video products over the past several years. Logitech continues to strengthen its commitment to providing compelling devices and applications that bring the power of video into every day lives.
The Logitech® Pocket Video cameras
The Logitech® Pocket Video™ digital video cameras, available only in the European consumer electronics market, are easy to use, small enough to carry anywhere, and powerful enough to capture anything. Pocket Video digital camcorders do not use tapes. Instead, they can capture up to an hour of video onto every 128MB Secure Digital (SD) card. Users can choose between alkaline AA batteries or the internal rechargeable battery pack. Once the video is recorded, the user can connect Pocket Video to a TV and instantly play back the images. Or the video can be downloaded to a PC to organize, archive and email video clips. Each Pocket Video comes bundled with Roxio® VideoWave® software for editing, making movies and burning clips onto CDs to view on compatible DVDs.
Nucleus selected for the Logitech Pocket Video™ cameras
Developers at Logitech evaluated options from different real-time operating system (RTOS) vendors. Their criteria for choosing an RTOS included finding tested software at an affordable cost as well as looking for an RTOS with a small code size. After considering their choices, the developers selected the Nucleus RTOS.
The Nucleus PLUS kernel is reliable and scalable; developers can scale the kernel down to as small as 17KB, including both code and data sizes, for the ARM7 processor. This is important for feature-intensive consumer electronics applications such as the Pocket Video™ cameras. Additionally, with Mentor Graphics' royalty-free business model, developers using the Nucleus kernel saved money by not passing on the cost of royalty fees to the consumer.
Besides the Nucleus PLUS kernel, the basis for the Nucleus family of products, Logitech developers also used the Nucleus FILE file management software and the Nucleus GRAFIX software graphics package to build the digital video recorder.
