The MPOS2002 point-of-sale (POS) terminal
MPOS2002, developed by M.POS Limited in Hong Kong, is an electronic funds transfer (EFT) point-of-sale (POS) terminal capable of processing magnetic cards or smart card payments in real time from any location. The terminal can also capture and transmit data for corporate applications, make voice calls and even offer fingerprint verification. It has messaging capabilities that include sending, receiving and printing short message services (SMS), sending and receiving email messages and instant text messages.
Nucleus Selected for the MPOS2002
At M.POS Limited, developers wanted a real-time operating system (RTOS) that had a proven reputation in the performance-critical market. Purchasing an RTOS provided with source code and without royalty fees was important as well. Additionally, the RTOS needed to support the Samsung S3C3410 processor that was also selected for developing the point-of-sale device. After researching the RTOS market, M.POS decided on Mentor Graphics’ Nucleus PLUS real-time kernel for implementation in the POS product.
Recent advances in electronic circuitry and the use of Nucleus software made the richness of functionality possible on a traditionally single-function device. The Nucleus RTOS is an industrial strength, multi-threaded environment suitable for secure and performance-critical applications involving financial transaction processing. It is portable, flexible and highly scalable, letting M.POS developers add only the features they want in their wireless terminal. In addition, M.POS developers took advantage of the source code and royalty-free business model that was provided with the Nucleus software. This allowed the cost savings to be passed on to M.POS customers.
"Nucleus provides all the system functionality we were looking for when we started planning this terminal. We had to be language-independent and capable of multiple communications protocols. The tools made the job of development significantly easier, and we have created something that suits our market very well at this time," said M.POS group CTO Derek Smith. "Nucleus PLUS is royalty-free and this is also important in a market the size of China."
