Navionics Geonav (Navigational Plotter)

"The reasons we chose Nucleus PLUS are well summarized by Mentor Graphics' positioning statement: 'Source Code, No Royalties, Any CPU.' With the immediate availability of the PC version of Nucleus PLUS, we could develop, debug and test the very same application designed for the embedded product on our PCs. In addition to the flexibility of Nucleus PLUS, which greatly decreased our development time, we were very pleased with the responsiveness of Mentors' technical support." --Federico Sturlese, Engineering Manager of Navionics.

undefinedIn 1997, Navionics had the pleasure of introducing three navigational plotters (instrumentation that displays charts and boat position using GPS technology) that are based on Nucleus PLUS software architecture: the Geonav 6, the Geonav 6 Plus, and the Geonav Elite.

The main features of the Geonav 6 include six-inch display, 32 bit 7110 ARM7 based CPU, 1MB DRAM, 512k Flash with embedded world map, eight satellites integrated GPS, user-friendly interface, and boat and car installation ready. The Geonav 6 Plus is the same base model as the Geonav 6 but with 12 channels GPS. Finally, the features of the Geonav Elite consist of seven-inch display, external I/O, and professional applications (large boats, off shore).

Navionics currently has main offices in Italy and the United States, with regional offices in Japan, Monaco, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Australia. The Navionics network includes distributors in over fifty countries on all continents with hundreds of retail outlets, giving Navionics the most extensive distribution network in its field in the world.

Navionics' customers originate from both the public and private sectors, and include recreational boaters and fishermen, governments of several nations, navies and coast guards, and offshore racing teams. Navionics' "seamless" technology is a standard used by leading global marine electronics manufacturers such as B&G, Furuno, Garmin, Geonav, Lowrance, Magellan, Marinetek, Micrologic, Navicontrol, Navico, Northstar, Panasonic, Philips, Radio Ocean, and TrimbleNavigation.

Navionics redesigned their software architecture around the Nucleus PLUS realtime kernel. This, combined with a different modular approach, permitted engineers to develop a software library allowing different people to develop software for navigation systems compatible with Navionics' standard of cartography.
