Nucleus RTOS: Selected by Telephonics as OS of SDI System for USAF C-130 Avionics Modernization Program

At Telephonics, developers wanted a real-time kernel that had a proven reputation in the performance-critical market. Purchasing a kernel provided with source code and without royalty fees was important as well. After researching the embedded OS market, Telephonics decided on Mentor Graphics' Nucleus RTOS real-time kernel for implementation in the SDI product.

The Nucleus RTOS kernel will be programmed into the interphone control units (ICU) and communications and navigation control panel (CNCP) of the United States Air Force C-130 aircraft as part of the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP). The ICU permits monitoring of and transmission on all radios from all operator panel locations as selected by individual crewmembers. It also provides aural warnings and defensive system audio at each operator station. It provides intercommunications between the crewmembers and the ability to address passengers and crew through cockpit and cargo compartment speakers.

The ICU provides a highly reliable digitally controlled central intercommunications system that is compatible with active noise reduction (ANR) headsets or systems. The ICU allows monitoring of, and transmission on, all radios from all ICU locations as selected by individual crewmembers. The system shall include the ability to address passengers and crew through the PA system. The communications plan for each aircraft configuration determines the number of ICUs (up to 4) and the number of control audio panels (up to 32) in the system.

The Nucleus RTOS kernel will also be used to program the CNCP for use in the USAF C-130 Avionics Modernization Program (AMP). The CNCP provides operator/machine interface to enable selection and control of the communication radios. It also manages the display and control (i.e. pushbuttons) for both normal and backup modes of operation. CNCPs are provided for the pilot and copilot only.

Secure Digital Intercommunication (SDI) System

Telephonics's SDI SystemTelephonics newest intercommunication system, Secure Digital Intercommunication (SDI), is a fully digital/open architecture system with modular, scaleable configurations. SDI is designed for fixed wing aircraft, helicopters and ground shelter applications; providing high quality audio and secure communications capability - specifically designed to meet the customer's future requirements and offer additional value to their programs.
