Nucleus Secure Kernel for DO-178B Level A Application

Format: PDF Document

The DO-178B standard provides guidance for determining, in a consistent manner, and with an acceptable level of confidence, that the software aspects of airborne systems and equipment comply with airworthiness requirements. Formally recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 1992, DO-178B mandates that companies producing avionics components must comply with the DO-178B process. There is no debate that compliance can be costly. DO-178B process requirements add time and complexity to product development. In fact, DO-178B projects cost companies an additional 25 to 150 percent over non-DO-178B projects.

This paper discusses why some of the most common aerospace companies struggle when seeking "Commercial off the Shelf" software (COTS) to use in DO-178B applications. Combining knowledge from various perspectives including certification authorities, consultants, and users, this paper provides perspectives on how companies can address these costly issues to improve their bottom line and reap the many benefits in the process.
