I hope you have all had a fantastic holiday and that you’ve come back to work safe and sound.

What's the design flaw?

What's wrong with this analysis? Image and animation courtesy of Mentor Graphics.

I thought it might be fun to do something a bit different with my first post of the year – afterall today is supposed to be the gloomiest day of the year :-(

Anyway, one of my colleagues recently created a little CFD animation which had an intentional flaw in it. The animation was used for a contest (which has now closed so please don’t send in your answers). The puzzle proved as a nice challenge so I thought it might be a good idea to share it with you here. To see the animation please click on the image in this post — it’ll take you to another page where you can watch the clip.

The possible choices are:

A.    The boundary conditions are set incorrectly so the airflow over the car is in reverse.
B.    The boundary conditions are set incorrectly so the airflow through the car is incorrect.
C.    The pressure field is set incorrectly so there is water running over the car instead of air.
D.    There is no flaw.

Do you know which one it is? I’ll include the answer in my next post.
Until next time,
Nazita
