LED’s are fast becoming a standard within the automotive industry, these small but powerful diodes allow Design Engineers the ability to redesign and optimize previous designs. However, this new technology brings with it new thermal challenges. Used in cabin lighting, instrument panels, head lights and tail lights, the change from bulbs to LED’s requires the Design Engineer to balance light output against power and the optimal product dimension. This new technology is so different from the days of bulbs that a whole new area of LED thermal analysis has emerged to help designers achieve reliable cost effective products.
With the introduction of thermal simulation this process can be easily simulated without the expense of a costly prototype program. Not just an expense financially, but also in man hours needed to arrive at a suitable design within specification. With the early introduction of ‘Concurrent Computational Fluid Dynamics’ into an Engineers design process, the Engineer can see potential problem areas while at the early design stages. They are able to test ‘What-If’ scenarios, all within their familiar MCAD system. The time and cost of designing new lamp models can be reduced to a minimum with fast reliable results that can stand up against physical prototype testing.

About the Presenters
Boris is an Application Engineer in Frankfurt (Germany) of the Mechanical Analysis Division. He studied aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart with the major in aircraft design and aerodynamics with specialized knowledge in the CAD suite Catia V5. He graduated in 2007 and that’s when he also started at NIKA/Flomerics now Mentor Graphics. He is responsible for FloEFD support, training, consultings and software demonstrations.
Education and Employment
Noam is an Applications Engineer based in Israel and working for the Mechanical Analysis Division of Mentor Graphics. He graduated from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in 2006 – B.Sc. Aerospace Engineering. For the past 3 years he worked for IAI – Israel Aerospace Industries 2006-2009 in the Aerodynamics and Structural loads department – working on static and dynamic loads analysis using FEM software. He also worked in the Structural design and Analysis department using structural FEM analysis – NASTRAN, PATRAN.
