In this web seminar Professor Bromley will describe his tried and proven philosophy of athlete-enabled engineering & technological developments in winter sports particularly related to his own sport of bobsled skeleton where he was World Champion in 2008. His small Sheffield, UK-based company, Bromley Technologies Ltd, launched a managed, sponsorship funded, high performance sports engineering initiative in 2007 that seeks to add value to elite athlete performance through technological innovation and wizardry. Operating in the same mold as a mini Formula One Motor Sport team, Bromley harnesses world class technological expertise from world leading companies and fuses it with Bromley’s pedigree and proven highly specialized engineering expertise in bobsled sports. The F-ICE program, as it is called, is a world’s first and is designed to complement the athlete’s own world class performance.
In this webinar, the history of CFD engagement in various sports and the benefits to be gained will be outlined. Then, how the Pro/E CAD-embedded CFD package, FloEFD, and its Concurrent CFD fluid flow analysis approach throughout Bromley’s design process has helped Bromley Technologies to have a direct influence on the aerodynamic usability and reliability of their finished product. Designing within the Pro/Engineer environment which he was familiar with, and using FloEFD shortened Kristan’s design lifecycle dramatically by an order of magnitude, thus enhancing their workflows leading to optimal, more robust, bobsled skeleton designs and all within extremely demanding competitive sporting timescales where the difference between winning and losing can be measured in fractions of a second or a few millimeters.
During this presentation, the presenter will demonstrate to you how easy it is with Concurrent CFD to simulate the design of a scanned elite athlete on a bobsled skeleton geometry, and then evaluate the aerodynamic results. Bromley’s technological vision for the Sochi 2014 Olympic cycle will be sketched out as well as opportunities in other sports plus there will be ample time for questions afterwards.

About the Presenters
Kristan Bromley
Professor Kristan Bromley, a two-time Olympian, World and European Champion in the sport of Skeleton, is also an award winning design engineer. Currently, a visiting professor at Sheffield Hallam University, Dr. Bromley had a 12 year high profile career with BAE SYSTEMS. His work focused on Eurofighter and Airbus engineering projects, where he gained considerable experience in advanced composites design and manufacture processes and non-destructive testing (NDT). During his time at BAE, Kristan became project manager and chief engineer for a company sponsorship programme, supporting the technological needs of the British Skeleton team 1994-2002. This period included managing a BAE – Nottingham University research collaboration, which facilitated Kristan’s world leading PhD studies in Skeleton Bobsleigh Performance, and gained him the nickname ‘Dr Ice’. Kristan subsequently managed research collaboration between Bromley Technologies Ltd and Bath University.
Keith Hanna
Dr. Keith Hanna holds several degrees in engineering from the University of Birmingham in the UK and has been involved with industrial CFD since 1989, first at British Steel PLC, then at both Fluent Inc. and ANSYS Inc. in technical, marketing and managerial positions. Currently Productline Director at Mentor Graphics in its Mechanical Analysis Division, he retains an abiding interest in popularizing CFD to schools, colleges and the general public, and in its application to the Sports & Leisure product Industry in particular. Having been actively involved with Formula 1 motor racing aerodynamics in the early 1990s, he has since gone on to help explain the mysteries of “bending a ball” at a soccer free kick à la David Beckham, understand posture and technique as related to aerodynamic and hydrodynamic performance in certain Olympic sports, plus the design of Americas Cup yachts. He has the distinction of being the first person to simulate air flow over a complete Formula 1 Racing Car using viscous CFD techniques in 1996 with the then unheard of mesh size of ~10,000,000 cells! Currently he sits on the Executive Committee of the International Sports Engineering Association having been there at its foundation. He has been instrumental in promoting the use of CFD in various sports around the world and in helping to enhance elite athlete performance, plus he is a regular keynote speaker at various international sports science and technology conferences and events when time permits.
