Evaluation of Control Set Points for Dual Use Heater Core and Active Grille Shutter (AGS) Systems Using 1D CFD Vehicle Thermal Modeling

Overview

With increasing pressure to meet US CAFE fuel economy standards, various technologies and control strategies are being developed to actively manage the vehicle drag and engine thermal performance to squeeze out additional fuel economy performance for different types of vehicles. Many of these strategies don’t necessarily easily work together and the onus is on the vehicle integrators to analyze the interactions between systems and devise an active control system to maximize overall performance.

In this webinar, Sudhi Uppuluri of Computational Sciences Expert Group (CSEG), describes how a 1D system level vehicle level thermal model is used to evaluate dual use heater core technology (DUHC) and its control set point in relation to Active Grill Shutters (AGS) actuation and the engine thermostat set-points. The actuation set-points for DUHC, AGS and Thermostat are analyzed together and their interactions are explored for stable control of the engine operating temperature for efficiency. The stability of the combined system is analyzed and guidance is provided on individual set points to achieve performance while maximizing the durability and performance of the various sub-systems.

He worked as a consulting engineer and sales manager at Flowmaster USA for 8 years. He has various technical publications on related subjects in SAE and AIAA journals. Suhdi Uppuluri holds a Masters in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Certificate in Strategy and Innovation from the MIT Sloan School of business
