WILSONVILLE, Ore., February 6, 2013 - Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced the next generation of the FloEFD™ concurrent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation product for improved performance, usability and functionality. New functionality coupled with performance enhancements help users by providing intelligent “what-if” analysis for improved product development. With the latest version of the FloEFD product, users can expect a significant workflow process improvement including automated geometry clean up with performance speed up to ten times faster than traditional methods, and the ability to mesh complex models. This new release includes a Parametric Study Tool and NASTRAN Bridge to speed analyses, and improvements to handle complex geometries. These new capabilities will help engineers meet time-to-market windows with greater design reliability.

Parametric Study and Compare Tools for Easy “What-if” Analysis
The new Parametric Study feature provides automatic parametric simulations for effective “what-if” analysis resulting in a table of various use cases that help the engineer determine the ideal solution. Another new feature is the compare tool that provides results from various projects from different configurations in one window. Analysis results, graphs, and tables allow the user to compare data for easy selection, saving time and effort.

Improved Handling of Complex Geometries
The new FloEFD release provides improved geometry handling to support extremely complex geometries and complex assemblies with multiple instances of the same component (examples: full system containing hundreds of chips, building containing dozens of fans, etc.). Users can simply copy conditions to other component instances without having to repeat the same operation time after time. The redesigned interface quickly locates and identifies geometry issues. Now models to address possible geometry problems can be tested and fixed easily.

NASTRAN Bridge for Structural Analysis
Multi-physics simulation is now required for many products. A new generic interface to NASTRAN structural analysis modules allows users to export pressure and temperature data from the FloEFD product for structural or thermal simulation. Thus, analyses for stress, vibration, structural failure, and heat transfer can help engineers develop safer and more reliable designs within shorter time-to-market timelines.

Additional enhancements in the new FloEFD product include:

  • New leaks tracking tool that helps users find holes and gaps in the model by visualizing the route between the inner and outer parts of the model
  • Supports Linux x64 to leverage multicore PCs (such as a Linux cluster) for effective parametric study with multiple variants calculated at each node concurrently
  • The new “Line Integral Convolution” and “evenly spaced lines” options easily highlight flow structures that are difficult to see using the standard vector or trajectory plots. In addition, the density of streamlines is automatically adapted when zooming, both speeding and aiding result interpretation.
  • Local erosion/accretion rates can now be visualized at surfaces to help engineers predict damage or material build-up due to particle impact
  • Enhanced physical models are provided for low temperature condensation of gases and steam (down to -70oC) in, for instance, cooling towers at power plants

Also with this release, Mentor Graphics is providing a tightly coupled general-purpose 1D-3D CFD simulation software solution. With this unique combination, engineers can characterize the more complex components of a system in 3D (FloEFD) and easily insert those components into the 1D system-level model (Flowmaster®) for simulation. This provides higher accuracy for the components while minimizing the computational resources and execution times at the system level. Coupling this with the new Parametric Study tool allows the performance curve or surface of a 3D component in FloEFD to be exported for direct import into Flowmaster’s 1D CFD system.

“We are addressing the complexities found in today’s systems designs with our next-generation FloEFD product, with advanced performance, usability and functionality,” said Erich Buergel, general manager of the Mentor Graphics Mechanical Analysis Division. “New features for ‘what-if’ analysis, Linux and NASTRAN support will help designers to quickly identify design problems so they can deliver their innovative products faster and with greater confidence in product performance.”

Concurrent CFD for Advanced Productivity and Reliability
The Mentor Graphics® Concurrent CFD methodology can reduce simulation time by as much as 65 to 75 percent compared to traditional CFD tools. It enables users to optimize product performance and reliability while reducing physical prototyping and development costs without time or cost penalties. The FloEFD product is an established technology and supported by a dedicated CFD development team. Mentor Graphics is the world’s third largest general purpose CFD provider with the largest knowledge base in electronics cooling.
