SmartParts3D Models of Optoelectronic Couplers Speed Customers’ Designs

Vishay Intertechnology has substantially reduced thermal design time for its customers by providing thermal models of its optoelectronic couplers via the "SmartParts3D" web site. Mechanical engineers can now download compact models of Vishay optoelectronic couplers and incorporate them directly into thermal simulations using the FloTHERM software from Flomerics. This approach is much faster and more accurate than the alternative of modeling the couplers from scratch. "We measured the junction temperatures of our devices following JEDEC standards and provided the results to Flomerics," said Eugene Lee, Engineering Manager for Vishay. "They created compact thermal models that predict junction temperatures in real-world design within +-5%. We provide these models to our customers who can simply import them into a thermal simulation without having to take the time to model our components. Compact models also reduce simulation solution times."

Vishay joins Alpha Novatech, Bergquist, Brady, Chomerics, Comair Rotron, Delta, Dow Corning, EBM Industries, ETRI, Honeywell Electronic Materials, HS Marston Aerospace, JMC Products, Mechatronics Fan Group, Micronel, NMB Technologies, Papst, Philips Semiconductors, Sunon, Thermagon, ThermalWorks, Universal Air Filters, YS Tech, and many others that have contributed data to the SmartParts3D library, located at The library is searchable by part family, description, manufacturer, model number, and performance criteria. Models can be downloaded from the website and imported into FloTHERM, which has become the standard tool for design and optimization of cooling systems for electronics equipment with a user base twice that of all competitors combined.

Initially, Vishay will provide SmartParts3D models of its new Optotriac and Solid State Relay which are designed to isolate electronic circuitry from high voltages that might damage or cause interference to them. FloTHERM software from Flomerics reduces the time and skill required to simulate complicated electronics cooling problems, because it is specially designed for electronic cooling applications. FloTHERM provides tools that allow users to assemble models from libraries, avoiding the need to create them from scratch.
