UbiNetics and Flomerics overcome thermal design challenges to produce tester for 3G mobile communications networks

UbiNetics has turned to Flomerics to help overcome thermal design challenges in the design of the TM500 Test Mobile for testing evolving 3G mobile communications networks.

The TM500 emulates all the capabilities of a HSDPA W-CDMA* mobile terminal, with download speeds of up to 14Mbps and advanced test interfaces, making it an ideal tool for network infrastructure equipment developers.

Early in the design process, UbiNetics engineers recognised they had a thermal challenge, with many high-power, high-speed components replacing those in the
previous-generation product. UbiNetics consulted thermal design experts at Flomerics, who performed rapid thermal simulations to predict airflow and temperature throughout
the system.

"The TM500 has been developed on a highly compressed design cycle, and went all the way from concept to production in just seven months," said Jeff Sinclair, senior hardware designer at UbiNetics. "The thermal simulations performed by Flomerics had a major impact on important mechanical design decisions such as fan location and grille design, and enabled us to make these decisions quickly. We re-designed the front panel to increase airflow, introduced "cheese-grater" porous plates above and below the main circuit boards, and used slatted louvers to direct air where it was needed. Compared to a test-and-fix approach, with costs of around $15,000 and a delay of 3-4 weeks for each re-test, Flomerics' thermal simulations saved us at least 1-2 months of design time. When we reached the prototype stage, the thermal simulations correlated well with experimental measurements, which further increased our confidence that the new unit will operate reliably in the long-term under normal operating conditions," he added.

* High-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) is based on the evolution of wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) technology and has been standardized in the third-generation partnership project (3GPP) Release 5 specifications. Targeted at mobile multimedia applications, HSDPA is capable of achieving reduced delays and peak data rates up to 14 Mbps in the downlink, i.e.from the basestation to the mobile terminal.
