Vial Filling Cleanroom Case Study - Chiron Corporation

This paper reports a recent case study carried out for the Chiron Corporation, demonstrating the use of CFD to assess the ventilation performance in a Vial Filling Facility (PDU fill room) and its subsequent optimization. As a result, facilities engineers identified a significantly improved configuration for the cleanroom without interfering with the normal manufacturing process. FloVENT is now used in-house.

A Real Application of Airflow Modeling in Optimizing Cleanroom Design

This paper outlines a method for optimizing cleanroom design using FloVENT airflow modeling software. To a large extent, these new methods dispense with old empirically-based techniques and allow each new air flow design to be created without relying on past experiences or mock-ups of the space being designed.

The work presented in this paper is based on an actual project. A cleanroom was modeled using air flow rates determined through empirical techniques based on heat loads to the space from machinery and occupants. A sensitivity study was then carried out to assess the effect of optimizing air flow design to and from the space.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Applied to Cleanroom and Isolator Applications

This paper describes the application of airflow modeling to cleanroom and isolator design, backed up by case studies. Traditional techniques using empirical relationships and methodologies based on past experience are inadequate, whereas CFD can be used to predict exactly how a cleanroom will perform given a certain set of conditions.

Numerical Modeling of Closely Spaced Supply Diffusers in a High Air Change Rate Application

This poster paper shows the validity of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling in predicting the flow conditions within a close temperature control application (20±0.1°C) by comparison with measured results from a full-architectural mock-up. The application was found to be innately sensitive to small changes in the boundary conditions, presenting a stiff test of the predictive capabilities of the tool.

It demonstrates how FloVENT modeling and the RCI can enhance the work of data center design consultants or serve as a design specification for owners and operators. Combined with CFD, RCI provides measures the cooling effectiveness of different designs.

Modeling Smoke and Fire in a Hotel Bedroom

This paper discusses the need to predict the “bulk” effects on the surrounding environment in the event of fire. A hotel bedroom fire experiment performed by NIST is used to verify the results of the simulation, which predicts room airflow, temperature distribution, and safety factors such as hazardous gases and visibility under realistic boundary conditions, including furniture or ventilation systems.
