DFM, starts with Design and ends with Manufacturing
In the world of a PCB designer where component placement, complex fan outs and copper routing is completed at an ever increasing rate, it is easy to forget that effective DFM starts in Design and ends with Manufacturing, just like the three letter acronym implies. All too often manufacturing related issues impede the completion of the bare board fabrication process or hinder the next step in the assembly process that should have been located at the designer desktop. Eventually one finds, no matter how hard one might try, it is impossible to manufacture in good design practices.
This blog will discuss various topics regarding effective DFM practices. What are the possible strategies in implementing DFM solutions within various organizational structures? When should DFM be performed, throughout the layout process or at the end? What are the critical types of fabrication and assembly analysis are available prior to manufacturing? What are possible improvements in the product realization process are in use today? Why does it seem there is never time to do it right the first time, but there is always time to do it again? And much more . . .
