ODB++ Data Exchange Format
More accurate, more complete PCB design-to-manufacture data
ODB++ does away with reverse engineering by the manufacturer, or prototyping to prove the manufacturability of the design. More integrated data means better communication, resulting in faster NPI cycles with improved product quality. Other formats, such as Gerber, Excellon, component placement lists and BOMs, are ambiguous by nature, involving multiple formats and translations. Worst of all, paper documents may be sent along with multiple files to compensate for missing data.
ODB++ combines an explicit structure with an unprecedented level of intelligence to define the printed circuit board and assembly in all aspects needed for manufacture. All the data is included - graphics, drill, rout, components, drawings, test points, netlist, specifications, the works. Data representation is fully WYSIWYG, displaying objects exactly as they will appear in manufacturing - leaving no room for misinterpretation. Plus, users can easily attach attributes to individual features, then save them within the database as the need arises.
Advantages of ODB++
- The ODB++ format captures all PCB design, assembly and fabrication knowledge into a single, unified file structure.
- Eliminates time-consuming reverse-engineering; facilitates automated, repeatable engineering processes.
- Establishes a continuous, traceable engineering process between design, fabrication and assembly.
ODB++ makes taking a design to manufacture a virtually seamless operation. Because ODB++ provides the most complete description of the printed circuit assembly, data transfer is more efficient and more comprehensive. Designers benefit from a WYSIWYG representation of the layout and direct interaction with their EDA layout system; manufacturers receive intelligent data ready for the tooling process; assemblers benefit from cleaner, complete data for line and machine program optimization.
