Time-to-Market is what it’s all about at Fujitsu Technology Solutions (FTS) in Augsburg, Germany. With that focus, their PCB designers had to be assigned shift work to meet their time-to-market goals and their design tools were maxed out. So they needed to upgrade their entire design tool flow. On top of that, end-of-life notices had been issued for a number of their older tools. Thus, they were faced with a problem: how to migrate to a new toolset while, at the same time, ensuring that the new tools could grow with their requirements well into the future.
The Solution: Evaluation
FTS began their quest by evaluating tool suites from a number of different suppliers. It didn’t take long before Mentor was identified as the source of the tools they wanted because of the concurrent design capabilities and outstanding integration between design team disciplines. “The main reason we selected Expedition Enterprise is concurrency. Having XtremePCB with Expedition Enterprise allows us more flexibility in assigning designers to a project as needed to meet time-to-market requirements,” said Stephan Hornung, Senior Director, TSP Clients Group.
Expedition Enterprise in Action
The transition to Expedition Enterprise went very smoothly and in the first year more than two dozen boards were designed using Expedition and Xtreme. Because of the product’s performance, collaboration capabilities, and tight integration between tools, designers were very eager to make the transition to the new flow. In addition, Expedition Enterprise’s reputation as being easy to learn mitigated the pain of transitioning to a new tool package.
This eagerness of the designers “especially applies to XtremePCB which is, for us, the most important piece in the flow because the layout is usually the bottleneck at the end of the design and this is where you get stress with your schedule and you must finish your product on schedule” said FTS manager Nils Wittler. They began maximizing the potential of XtremePCB almost immediately. They routinely assigned three to five designers to a single project, working in parallel. Expedition enables concurrent editing on the same schematic, constraint sets and layout, all the while maintaining security and data ownership.
Often, people are reluctant to move away from a familiar environment, but such was not the case with Expedition Enterprise. “Our people realized the benefits of the tighter integration as well as the concurrent development capability. The CAD group and engineers were eager to move to Mentor,” explained Wittler.
Perhaps part of the reason for the eager acceptance was anticipating the relief of shift work with the concurrent design capabilities and integration.
More Expedition Capabilities
Signal integrity (SI) issues are very critical to motherboards due to routing density and operating speed. Identifying SI issues early—before any hardware is built—reduces time-to-market, prototypes and overall cost.
Expedition Enterprise can link with standard simulation tools, like HSpice, and also Mentor tools such as HyperLynx SI, for fast and accurate signal integrity analysis. In addition to HyperLynx SI and its benefits to Fujitsu’s Green products, HyperLynx Power Integrity (PI) can perform quick and accurate power distribution network analyses that can identify and help eliminate power-wasting design areas and further help make products meet Green requirements.
All in all, Expedition Enterprise and Xtreme technology has met or exceeded all of FTS’ goals, and allowed their workers to return to standard working hours.
“With the adoption of Expedition Enterprise, we realized the ability to shorten the design phase because our designers can now work in parallel. This can dramatically reduce the cycle time needed to finish a design.”
