Integrating FEA-based Motor Modeling and Multidiscipline System Simulation for EV/HEV Powertrain Design
Technology Overview
Abstract
Integrating high performance electric motors and power electronic circuits presents a challenge to EV/HEV Powertrain engineers. An effective component modeling and system simulation tool-flow is a strategic asset to these designers. Using Infolytica’s MotorSolve tool, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods can be leveraged for sizing and performance envelope calculations. This applies to both Brushless DC and Induction type machines. MotorSolve exports FEA-based motor models in the IEEE/IEC Standard VHDL-AMS format. These models can be directly imported into Mentor’s SystemVision product, where all of the other critical system components can be modeled and simulated, and their interactions with the motor can be analyzed. These components include the H-bridge (3-Phase Voltage Source Inverter) electronics, controls, sensors and even complex load dynamics. SystemVision can be used to assess system-level performance (e.g. torque ripple, efficiency, etc.) as well as component-level ratings and stress, under various operating and environmental conditions.
